A Rank Above

Our annual Blue & Gold Banquet marked the "end" of another Scout Season. At least in terms of requirements. The fun does not stop though as we still have 3 events to come: The Heritage Festival fundraiser, Spring Family Camping at French Creek, and a Wilmington Blue Rocks game in August. Don't the new ranks and sheet cake celebration fool you. Den meetings may be done but family fun continues.

At this year's ceremony we honored about 30 of our 51 registered Scouts with their well-earned rank badges. Other scouts who couldn't make it will receive theirs from their Den Leaders. We hope that missing the B&G doesn't mean that they aren't excited for next year and the rest of the activities. Even without everyone in attendance, we had at least 80 people in the Llanerch Presbyterian basement when you count proud parents and siblings. It was a full house and quite raucous, except when the hush fell over everyone trying to hear soft-spoken lines in the annual skits.

The Lions started with the classic "Invisible Bench." the Tigers came up with their own song that seemed to capture the feeling of the room, which was "Announcements, announcements, announcements... are really, really boring." The Wolves split in two. First Trey Degulis and his "dog" Butch (played by Sam Parassio) had a lemonade stand with a surprise twist. Then Leo Johansen seemed to scare the rest of his Den 6 crew simply by saying Wipers with a bit of a lisp. The Bears had a 3-act play that was scripted from scratch and involved the shields they made in Baloo the Builder, plus some Girl Scout Cookies. Unfortunately the Troop had just returned from a big Washington D.C. trip so they weren't prepared to do a skit. They told the boys about what to expect in the 434 future instead. Then the adult leaders more than made up for it with not 1 but 2 songs. In the "If I were not a Cub Scout" group singalong, we all were waiting for Committee Chairman Tim Johansen to get hit by the bat of Jackie Cattie Degulis but somehow he ducked every time. Later he and Jeff Rains stole the show with a great spoof song that Weird Al would be proud of. The line that got the most laughs was, "Jack Garrett takes this very seriously."

Speaking of which, both Jack and Bill Volovnik were honored with their Square Knot badges for Den Leader Training to start the ceremony. Then Cubmaster Chris Hatton broke out his Matt Cord as 76ers announcer impression calling each kid to the stage with steady enthusiasm. He only flubbed one name and swears that's due to a discrepancy in Scoutbook itself. But overall the Blue & Gold was a great success again. In large part due to great food provided by Chef Pepino. Thanks Rich! Thanks all!
