Halloween Hijinx

Chris Hatton

My goodness, what a lively pack meeting! Gotta admit this one was very loosely about Scouting and very largely about being together with Scout friends and simply having fun. We did have kids lead the Pledge, the Oath, and the Law. We did pass out patches from our most recent camping trip. Then it was on to the action.

Special thanks to Julia Phillips who's stepped up as our Events Planner and helped organize a food and drinks table for the party. She also set up the costume contest with ballots and prizes (meaning Halloween-themed books). Also thanks to our Den Leaders who set up Halloween-themed game stations, with prizes (meaning candy). Some of the game stations were classics. Bears 6 had the Halloween Monster corn hole as always. Tigers brought back the Trick or Treat Cup Surprise game again. That one takes a lot of prep work but it's SO worth it. Thank you Patrick. Basically the kids pick a cup to stick their hand into, not knowing whether they'll get a candy Treat, or a handful of messy whip cream as a Trick. It's a blast.

Some new games picked up on some of those themes. The Webelos game also forced kids to risk getting messy. They were racing to bob for gummy bears in plates of whipped cream. They had to stick their faces right in. Some kids masks or costumes were getting in the way and that made it that much funnier. The Lions Plinko game came with Treats & Tricks too. If the Plinko chip landed in some rows they were rewarded with soda Treats and if it landed in the others, they'd have to drink maple syrup, pickle juice, or another Tricky liquid. Meanwhile, the Wolves supplied a golfing game where kids aimed to hit into a Jack-o-lantern's mouth. And the Bears 1 played pin the eye on the Zombie (in the vein of Pin the Tail on the Donkey).

During all these fun and games, kids were asked to vote for 4 costume categories. Winners were revealed at the end of the festivities: • Leo Johansen remains the reigning king of scariest costumes, his Lab Rat was awesome. • JP Heine ran away with the voting for funniest. Guess the Alien Abduction outfit is still getting the laughs and quickly becoming a classic • Garrett Kroeger won best homemade costume. No knock on the great handiwork but there really weren't many candidates. Lots of kids got votes who clearly got their masks on Amazon. • And Brennan Mery got the benefit of Phillies Fever as kids voted him most likely to Grow Up to become his Costume. Happy Halloween!
