The competitive spirits were high again at this year's Paper Football tournament. They weren't just trying to get to 35 points faster than their friends. They were even competing at who could fold the American flag crispest and fastest. That is the real lesson behind our Paper football tradition as "footballs" are folded the same way as flags. New Cubmaster Jack Garrett brought a whole bunch of flags to practice on. It was a great way for kids who got eliminated from football to still feel part of the fun.
Unfortunately most parents were upstairs learning about this year's program and missed much of the action. Honestly, if you only learn 1 thing about the program it should be this: "It's FUN." Good old-fashioned F-U-N. And therefore worth any added effort you need to make to fit it in the schedule and let kids by kids. Oh and they ocassionally learn things along the way. Like how to fold a flag or deal with the agony of defeat.
I was really proud of Webelo Matt Mullin this year who has become accustomed to winning this thing, and had to settle for 4th, right outside the medals. That's a tough place to be and he handled it with grace. As did all of the quarterfinalists who all believe they came in 5th. But they all had fun along the way too. Especially our top 3: Bronze: Owen Montemuro (Wolf) Silver: Jacob Hutton (Wolf) Gold: James Hutton (Arrow of Light) Congrats boys. Oh, and congrats to some adults too. Council leader Rob Schillingford was on hand to honor Jack, Tim, and I with some uniform bling for doing all our training and serving as volunteers in the Pack. Now I just need to get Tim to help sew them on.
