As far as I know, nobody left this year's Blue & Gold ceremony disappointed. There were laughs and giggles during the skits. There were chocolate and marshmallow syrup covered smiles from the kids. There were satisfied grins following a good meal from Chef Rich. There were proud smiles on their faces as they all ranked up and received their badges. There was even impromptu gleeful dancing. And like old Sitcoms had a catchphrase, we all laughed as the portable speaker repeatedly notified us that "Bluetooth is ready to connect" in a garbled electronic voice.
It was a good-kind of crowded in the Llanerch Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. We had over 40 kids live and in person, plus parents, siblings, and even extended family in some cases. Yet we still had leftovers. We certainly didn't have empty chairs though.
The Lions led off with "The Great Enlargerator" skit to much applause from the young Scouts who'd never seen that classic bit before. It was capped off by one boy getting water dumped on him. That's always good for laughs. The Tigers went "Ice Fishing" and were led around by a mystical voice. The Wolves went with the classic "Invisible Bench" bit and unfortunately Julian moved it "over there" so of course they all hit the stage with a "kerplump." Apparently some of the Bears "Can't Work in the Dark," while others are seeing ghosts or should I say "Phantoms in the Woods." Some Bears even did a 2nd skit in which their tracking skills really needed a lot of work. "What Kinda Tracks?" Turned out to be train tracks. Both skits ended with kids running off stage which is the kind of organized mayhem our 3rd graders love. Finally, the Webelos needed some "Clean Socks." If you couldn't hear the punchline, apparently you're supposed to change socks monthly so it pays to own 12 pairs. The theme was Lego-based and there were giveaways and activities that brought that to life and kept kids occupied while other tables were eating dinner. The Guess How Many legos contest resulted in 3 winners: Brennan Mery, Garrett Kroeger, and a sibling Kerry walked away with Koffmeiers gift cards. Adult leaders also got prizes. Pastor Tim handcrafted flannels with Pack 462 patches for each of us, plus a special Chef's apron for Rich. Very cool.
