Off to the District Derby

The top 5 racers from our Pack 462 Pinewood Derby are invited to go to the regional Constellation District Derby as well as the "Best in Show" winner, which was the top prize in our "Most Creative" contest. Technically, Hunter's X-wing should have got to enter both, but their rule said only 1 entry per car. That allowed Leo's car to represent us in the "Best in Show" competition. He also got to race. Meanwhile, our #3 Matt Mullin could not attend so the racers were: • Hunter Phillips "X-wing" • Wren Onopa's "Van Leeuwenhoek" • Colin Hatton's "Rock n' ROLL" • Andrew Phillips "Blue Angel", • Gus Johansen's "The Vindow Viper." • Leo Johansen's "Litter-ally Pawsome"

The boys got to race against a total of 60 scouts from 10 packs across the region. It was different due to a metal 4-lane track instead of our wooden 3-lane option. Winners were determined by lap times instead of heat placement. They each raced in every lane and the average of the 4 races was compared vs. everyone else. We didn't end up in the Winner's Circle, but Hunter was darn close to finishing top 5. He must have lost by hundredths of a second. We can't figure it out honestly and are awaiting the official list. He mostly finished in 3:12 area and the #5 car averaged 3:13 so maybe one off race dragged him out of contention. Meanwhile Colin and Gus had improved results on the metal track but more inconsistency. The Best in Show winner was an aircraft carrier with multiple decks and play-doh somehow involved. It deserved it. Another one looked like Dopey dwarf in a glowing minecar. Another had an audio component. Very creative, cool to see other people's ideas.
