Paper Football Tourney

Chris Hatton

We brought back the beloved Paper Football tournament and flag-folding lesson for our November pack meeting. After learning how to properly fold an American flag, we tested their skills by having them fold their own paper footballs and decorate them. Then 33 of our nearly 50 overall Scouts joined in the showdown for the title of Paper Football Champion 2022. We started with an 8 table group stage. Thanks to all the parents who helped man each table. You served as referees, scorekeepers, teachers, and sometimes guidance counselors for disappointed participants. There was ~4 kids per station so they were guaranteed at least 3 games each. Although many of the Scouts had never even played paper football before and our 5 minute games didn't allow much time for trial and error, it actually did run pretty well. Organized chaos not utter mayhem.

The top 2 at each table moved on to a single elimination bracket. Unfortunately, not everyone could make it and some tables were very competitive. This one isn't so easy on the kindergartners, so maybe next year we'll have a sub-bracket just for them. But it was really the older scouts who lost that were most heartbroken. In the end, there were 4 medalists and 3 prizewinners. Matt Mullin won the grand prize / gold medal in a thrilling finals match against William Vilovnik (2nd prize/silver medal). In the consolation bracket, Jack DeLozier beat Luke Baer for 3rd place although both received medals.
