Relay Races are Back Too!

Chris Hatton

For 2 years, we had not been able to get back into Chatham Park, which had been our home-base for Pack meetings when we were at our largest. We've done just fine in Llanerch Presbyterian's Fellowship Hall for the most part. But Chatham has scooters. And scooters are always the Scout's absolute favorite part of our Relay Races pack meeting.

This year we broke into 4 groups, making sure to split kids evenly by ages. As always, there's the challenge of having even numbers, but we care more about making it fun than making it perfectly fair. We started with a new idea using giant exercise balls to promote teamwork. Each line broke into pairings. They had to squeeze the ball between each other and run back and forth without outright holding the ball itself. Simply having the balls around led to quite a bit of mayhem early on in the meeting. It was well worth it in the end. Luckily we did a better job of hiding scooters til the end.

Next up was a dizzy bats/cup stacking combo that had kids go from disoriented to dexterity in a heartbeat. Then we had a classic egg on spoon race with plastic Easter eggs. Only one egg was harmed in the process. Finally, we broke out the scooters. First for a kid's only race. Then vs. Scout leaders and other fun-loving adults willing to embarrass themselves. Yes, one scooter was also harmed in the process. The man responsible shall not be named publicly. You know who you are. Now we know that we can have access to Chatham again as needed, so there's plenty of places to host Den Meetings or Pack Events moving forward.
