Our first event of 2022-23 was a mix of excitement and I daresay disappointment. We were excited to see a bunch of new scouts ranging from fresh-faced kindergartners to returning Fifth graders who had skipped the COVID years. I was happy to hand out Class Bs on the spot. We were thrilled to get our first female Scout: Welcome new Bear Sylvia Garrett!
So why the disappointment? I think that there was a miscommunication for our returning scouts. Maybe "Round Up" needs a name change or at least a change of expectations. Round Up is NOT just for new scouts, it's to Round us ALL back up to start the new season. It's both our first pack meeting and our new scouts welcome. It's to make them feel excited about being part of a bigger group. To do that, they need to see the friends that they are hoping to see. So the kids can lead each other on a hike. Saturday events are tough with sports and parking was a nightmare, but new scouts outnumbered returnees. I should have made it clear that all were invited. My bad.
