Our annual service project that is across all local Scouting organizations and includes Troop 434 is a 2-weekend food drive. On back-to-back Saturday mornings, we met to canvas the Chatham park area. First kids run around and drop off Door Hangers for neighbors explaining the drive. Then the following weekend we regrouped to divide up the pickup territories. Dr. Kate Moore has been our point person for this event for more than a decade. She hands out 13 maps splitting up the area and coordinates with St. Mark's Methodist church in Broomall where they box up all of our generous donations and ship them on pallets to a regional food provider.
Our Scouts love running around together gathering bags of canned goods and plastic jars of peanut butter, jelly, or tomato sauce. There's even boxes of cereal and pasta. It can get heavy for our little ones, and they're all sweating despite the cold temperatures, but they love it nonetheless. Like running a Spartan race for a good cause. And getting to hang out the back of a moving car or truck is always a favorite memory too.
