Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Chris Hatton

Well if the Phillies won't let us on the field anymore, it's time to adapt. And find something even better. Mission accomplished. Pack 462 went to the Wilmington BlueRocks game on a Friday night that you would never believe was in August. We had 37 attendees which was more than expected due to vacations and prior commitments. The BlueRocks didn’t win but the Pack sure came out winners.

We got hot dogs, chips, and drinks with our tickets. The kids got autographs from Mr. Celery. The fireworks were better than any I’ve seen in the past decade (including Narberth and a bunch of shore towns). They got to go out on the field with immaculate grass that put Kevin Costner’s Field of Dreams to shame. Plus, we tailgated beforehand and Pastor Tim made chicken drumsticks in either Buffalo or Honey mustard sauces and pulled pork. Those who arrived early got to play cornhole and/or Wiffle ball in the parking lot as we waited for the line to get in Frawley Stadium to die down.

Oh did I mention that half of us elected to stay and SLEEP on the field! We actually set up tents (with no stakes). Got to walk around barefoot and play on that immaculate grass. They broadcast a movie on the not so JumboTron and we chilled out 2 hours before lights out around midnight. A long night for sure – but if young Lucy can do it, I encourage more people to stay next year. It was worth it. They even threw in a patch and a junkfood breakfast to top it all off. Definitely a huge bargain buy at their group rate. We’ll be looking to either redo this trip next year or rotate between similar experiences with other minor league clubs (ie Reading) for sure.
